Youth
so today i held in my arms a 7 day old human being and she slept on my chest. i was sitting on a couch with this perfect creature on my chest and i was completely engrossed in this baby. her fingers and nails; the way she would crunch her brow or move her eyebrow; her little chest rising and falling. she amazed and mesmerized me. i thought of nothing of the future and nothing of the past. i was completely in those moments of time. completely aware of my feelings and how this child made me feel in awe of nature and this universe.
there are only a two times i have felt miniscule in this world. the first was driving into the yosemite valley for the first time and the second was walking through the redwood forest in humboldt county. but today holding that baby - even though i felt small in the universe, i realized how each of us has something to contribute to this world and time. it’s hard to explain, but i felt both tiny and grand at the same moment. and i felt present. something i am doing more and more frequently these days. i have a long way to go, but i can see the growth!
quote:
like all of us in this storm between birth and death, i can wreak no great changes on the world, only small changes for the better, i hope, in the lives of those i love.
