This Idea is Much Inspired by Joseph Campbell

"The problem with middle life, when the body is at it's climax and then declines, is that often we identify ourselves with the body and not with the consciousness", our soul. Another way to say it.... "Do you consider yourself the bulb that contains the light or the light itself?" Most of us would say the light. Maybe we can start the work of not identifying with our body and knowing it is the vehicle for something much brighter, our consciousness. If we can practice this, does it "hurt" less then when our body deteriorates? Because it will (I hope I wasn't the one to break it to ya!)
